SYNONYMS IN ENGLISH

Definition

A synonym is a word having the same or nearly the same meaning as another word or a phrase. Antonyms are words which have the opposite (or nearly opposite) meaning. For example: new and old.

Words that are synonyms are referred to as being synonymous, and the state of being a synonym is called synonymy.

I. What is “Hot Potatoes”?

       

        The “Hot Potatoes” is a suite of quiz/drill-authoring software created at the University of Victoria, Canada. It includes six applications, enabling you to create interactive exercises:

l      multiple-choice quizzes (JBC)

l      gap-fill exercises (JClose)

l      text-entry (short-answer) exercises (JQuiz)

l      crosswords (JCross)

l      jumbled-sentence/jumbled-word (drag-and-drop) exercises (JMix)

l      ordering/matching (drag-and-drop) exercises (JMatch)

Now you can go to the tutorial folder to look at some examples of the kinds of exercise you can make using Hot Potatoes.

II. How can you download and register “Hot Potatoes”?

        This software is free of charge for non-profit educational users who make their exercises available on the web. However, if you are working in a commercial context, you need to pay for a licence. You can download “Hot Potatoes” version 5.5.0, self-extracting, auto-installing zip file at http://web.uvic.ca/hrd/hotpot/#downloads.

Whether you are commercial or otherwise, you need to register the programs. You have to fill in a form on their website http://142.104.133.52/admin/register.htm and get a registration key from them. You will use your personal key to unlock all the features of the programs. When you receive the key, simply start one of the Potatoes (any one will do), then click on the Help menu and choose Register. Then you can enter your User Name and Key.

Popular music is a good place to start learning English with songs because the sentences are easy to understand. The vocabulary is simple and the sentences are short and sweet.

Most pop songs are about love, heartbreak or having a good time. Not only does that make for easier vocabulary, it makes for some fun party music! Pop songs are made so that everyone will enjoy them and sing along. Many of them will want to make you start dancing immediately.

The best part about pop music is that you can find lyrics for songs almost anywhere on the internet. The lyrics to just about every English song in existence are available on sites like MetroLyrics and AZLyrics, and you can listen to music for free on YouTube Music or Soundcloud.

Usage of visual and voiced materials in English Language Teaching!

The effect of visual materials in language learning is quite important. Students can remember and keep the information in their long term memory by consuming visual and voiced material while learning a foreign language. ‘We live in a world where media are omnipresent. An increasing number of people spend a great deal of time watching television,reading newspapers and magazines,playing records and listening to the radio...The school and the family share the responsibility of preparing the young person living in a world of powerful images,words and sounds.’(UNESCO, 1982) Since media is common source, it is easy and useful to use these kind of materials in education. And it is very useful especially in foreign language education. Because foreign language students can have fun while learning, also it may help to develop students pronunciation and listening skills and may lead to a fluent language speaking. ‘Films are invaluable teaching resources for many reasons. They present colloquial English in real life contexts rather than artificial situations, and they expose students to a wide range of native speakers, each with their own slang, reduced speech, stress, accents, and dialects.’ (King,2010) Another benefit of using visual materials in foreign language education is motivation. Students may observe their own growth in their speaking and listening skills. Their accents, speech, pronunciation skills may improve and by observing that improvement, students may feel more confident and more motivated and this increase in their motivation may urge them to study more. ’People learn through reading, and reading about interesting new things in one’s interest subject, undoubtedly helps motivation.’(Sanderson, 2002)’ Using visual materials may also be more efficient than traditional education techniques. It may save both teachers and students time and effort, hence it contributes the process of learning and teaching a foreign language more productive, satisfactory, and effective. To sum it up, visual and voiced materials are beneficial sources in language education, because they are easy to find and use, they increases students verbal and listening skills, expand students confidence and motivation, and these materials are efficient compared to other methods.’Video is seen as an important resource for use in the EFL/ESL classroom because it is dynamic,immediate and accessible.’ (Lonergan in Walker, 1997)

A LOOK FOR AWARENESS ABOUT WATER SHORTAGE!

Water shortage is one of the world's major problems. A world without water is unimaginable. Water is the main source of life. While very few of the animals can live without water, people can not live without water. About eighty percent of the world is water. But there is an increasing water scarcity due to the increasing unconscious water consumption. Seven hundred million people in 43 countries suffer from water scarcity. The countries that suffer most from water shortages are Israel, Qatar, Bahrain, Lebanon, Nigeria and some African countries. Experts indicate that unconscious agricultural irrigation, pollution and population growth are among the main causes of the water scarcity. But of course, we can save our source of the life and our future with conscious consumption and water saving. For example, we can use water-saving dishwashers and touchless faucets. Using drip method in agriculture greatly saves water also. We need to raise people's awareness. We need to know that the water flowing down while we brush our teeth is life to the future.
